The Moon

The Moon began as a provocation in which we aimed to synthesize the works of Aert Van Der Neer with the Grimms brothers fairytale "The Moon". In its earliest stage, The Moon was a half hour production accompanied by a simple piano motif, but we saw something more. What started as a simple motif became a complete orchestral score, and the 30 minute runtime tripled as we expanded the narrative. As the show developed, inspiration was derived from psychosocial concepts developed by Erik Erikson, more specifically his stages of psychosocial development. Following four travelers' journey through life and loss, The Moon offers an interesting perspective on the human condition and the relationships that carry us through life, and invites the audience to relish in that newfound outlook. Each of the four travelers are haunted by their past actions, and find themselves at psychological forks much like the ones presented by Erikson. Finding it difficult to cope with the weight of their reality, the travelers beg the question: just what happens when you never allow yourself to feel?
